Top 10 Ayurvedic Tips for Better Sleep

‘Sleep is one of the three pillars that sustains human life’ says Dr. Flossy, Karma Royal’s Ayurvedic Physician. Here are her suggestions to help you sleep better.

1. Before bed, a warm bath or shower can help to calm the nervous system and relax the body ensuring a healing and restful night’s sleep.

2. Eat dinner at least 2 hours prior to your bed time so that you do not go to sleep on a heavy stomach as it might cause indigestion and disrupt sleep.

3. Before bed, masssge your scalp and the soles of your feet with brahmi or any other oil to enhance peaceful a sleep, rejuvenating the mind and bringing calm and clarity.

4. Generally 6 to 7 hours of sleep is sufficient. If you are not getting enough sleep, try going to bed by 10 and do not indulge in a daytime nap. Try to maintain a more or less fixed bedtime.

5. Try waking before sunrise for those with kapha constitution, at sunrise for those who are pitta and after sunrise for the vata.early to bed and early to rise is a good recommendation for all 3 constitutions.

6. Consuming herbs like chamomile, passion flower, and green tea help to calm mind, soothe nerves and support sound restful sleep.

7. Practicing meditation for 5 to 20 minutes – particularly before bed – is an effective way to reduce stress, dissolve anxiety, and invite a sense of calm to your mind. This simple practice helps to release tension and worries before they interfere with your sleep.

8. A brisk, thirty-minute walk after sunset – especially surrounded by nature – is a secret to sound sleep and longevity.

9. Practicing yoga is very therspeutic for sleep. The most soothing posture or asana is the savasana or corpse pose that gives total relaxation and induces sleep.

10. Avoid stimulants like caffeine which can disrupt one’s natural sleep cycle. Instead, try a cup of warm milk spiced with nutmeg, cardamom, cinnamon, or turmeric at least one hour before bed which helps to fight insomnia.
