Bali's Best Fitness Spots

We asked Judy Chapman, Spa Curator for Karma Spas for the karma Royal Group about how to stay fit in Bali.  ‘This island offers an increasing variety of choices in fitness which suits me well as I am not that loyal to one particular modality as I like to mix things up,’  she says. ‘Overall I enjoy the freedom of dance, the clarity in my mind after high intensity training and how centered I feel after Pilates.’ Below are Judy’s favorite work-out spots in Bali.

Pilates at Sunset Pilates
I have been a regular here for a few years now and can honestly say Pilates changed my life – for the better. Spending an hour focusing on core body strength is such a great way to center the mind. Sunset Pilates is my sanctuary! It’s a well-equipped studio and offers both classic reformer as well as mat Pilates classes.  Both instructors, Rachel and Nancy, are exceptional teachers.

Sunday Dance at Yoga Barn in Ubud
Sometimes the best way to exercise is without any structure or instruction. I have been going to Sunday Dance on and off for five years now and for me this is one of the most inspiring ways to move my body. The experience of these free flow dance sessions set in a Balinese structure overlooking rice fields is pure inspiration.  I also recommend their Friday night Ecstatic Dance sessions.

Barre at Bali Pilates Studio
I discovered the amazing Barre classes in NYC last year and was ecstatic to find them here in Bali. Bali Pilates Studio offers the Xtend Barre style that is a full-on intensive one-hour workout fusing dance, cardio and Pilates movements – a fun and sweaty way to sculpt the body.

Yoga Therapy at Karma Kandara
Don’t miss a session with the amazing Teddy Sun who is the resident teacher at Karma Kandara. His expertise shines through in all of his classes.  Teddy teaches a full spectrum of styles inclusive of power yoga, restorative yoga, core strength and meditation as well as stand-up paddleboard to guests at Karma Beach Bali – a fun ‘yoga on the water’ experience.

Seminyak Yoga Shala
This gorgeous new yoga studio – with an attached raw food bar – and yoga wear store is located in the heart of Seminyak. Offering morning Mysore practice for the ashtangi’s as well as afternoon Vinyasa flow, afterwards head to Divine Earth for a juice or raw food delight. If you love yoga to music then check out their Friday night sessions – a recommended prequel before heading out to a party!
Jalan Raya Basangkasa No 1200B, Denpasar, Bali, Indonesia.

Motion Fitness Bali
This little place is great for HIT training (one of my favorite ways to stay in shape and feel mentally better and apparently helps unlocks the growth hormones!). Motion Fitness offer daily group fitness classes that make you sweat sweat sweat – there’s no time for rest here! Classes are a hybrid of cardio, aerobic and core-strength and they also offer yoga and pilates.

Yoga at Desa Seni
A well regarded retreat destination that deserves mention for its variety of yoga classes happening from dawn to dusk seven days a week. Their eclectic menu includes Asthanga, Vinyasa, Kundalini, Nia Yoga, Meditation and Pranayama – along with special classes such as full moon chanting and tantric workshops.

The Art of Body
Pole Dancing in Bali? Who would have thought? But this is some of the magic to living on this island – there’s allot going on beyond tourist-centric activities. Pole dancing is such a beautiful sensual way to tone and sculpt. Instructor Natalie is also an inspiring personal trainer and just being around her motivates one to want to become more fit and rejuvenated. The Art of Body also offers group and reformer Pilates classes.
