Italian-born Pilates instructor Alessia De Magistris, enlightens us on the art of Pilates. Alessia is a qualified Stott pilates Mat, Reformer, Chair, Cadillac instructor. Her classes are held every Wednesday 5-6pm at Temple Lounge at Karma Kandara.

1. PILATES IS A PHYSICAL FITNESS SYSTEM
It is not a derivative of yoga. Joseph Pilates was a physicist and he infused his belief that both mental and physical health is interrelated in Pilates.

2. CONTROLOGY’ IS PILATES’ SECOND NAME
Joseph Pilates believed that whoever is practicing Pilates should be in constant control of each and every movement. This mindfulness results in enhanced muscular control of the back, limbs and abdominal muscles.

3. ONE HOUR OF PILATES BURNS CALORIES ALL DAY LONG
You are continually building muscle through resistance training. Pilates helps you to continue to burn calories throughout the day long after your workout is done.

4. EVERY PILATES MOVE WORKS THE ENTIRE BODY
When you are doing the moves correctly, and you have to consciously engage your muscles, use control, breathing, preciseness for this to happen then you are working the entire body. Presence is key.

5. PILATES IS NOT JUST FOR THE FIT
Pilates stretches and strengthens all the muscles in the body without using heavy weights. Pilates works well for those who have suffered injuries or poor health and unable to complete other exercise methods. Pilates strengthens the core muscles of your back and stomach that in turn improves circulation and overall health as well as reduces the risk of back injury, provides a flat stomach, improves digestion and better posture…so many benefits!
