Bali Fitness: Work That Body at Movement Matters Bali

Slimming up and toning down ain’t always easy, which is why sometimes you need a little help from both trained teachers and technology. Welcome to Movement Matters Bali, the first studio in Bali (and one of the only studios in the world) to have three modalities under one roof: Pilates, Gyrotonic and Rolfing. When combined, these three methods work to improve strength, flexibility and posture, and they can even help with pain and stress management, injuries and rehabilitation. Plus, they work the muscles more efficiently to tighten up the body and create long, lean lines.

Founded by experienced senior instructor Sook Fun Chen, Movement Matters Bali is a custom built studio located in the quiet village of Nyuh Kuning in the healing centre of Ubud. As soon as you walk into the studio, you get the sense of light and space, as large windows allow for views out to lush greenery, the soaring alang-alang ceiling lets air flow freely throughout the studio, and long mirrors adorn the walls. The space is also air-conditioned, so you can work that body as hard as you like without having to worry about overheating.

Inside Movement Matters Bali you will also find state-of-the-art imported equipment from both GYROTONIC® and STOTT PILATES, plus a certified Rolfer™. Machines and equipment include standard mats, the Reformer, Cadillac, Stability Chair, Barrels, Wedge and a Gyrotonic® Pulley Tower. These are some of the best fitness machines in the world, and they help practitioners achieve quicker and more thorough results than you would get from mat work alone or a standard gym workout.

Never used or even heard of the machines before? Not to worry—the knowledgeable and compassionate instructors at Movement Matters Bali will give you the full run-down on each piece of equipment and walk you through the exercises so that you feel comfortable and confident in the studio and in your own personal workout. The class sizes here are small with a maximum of 8 students for mat classes and 3 students for Reformer classes, and students can also arrange one-on-one sessions for that extra attention.

Whether you’re an absolute beginner, an experienced fitness enthusiast, just out of high school or celebrating life as a grandparent, Movement Matters Bali has a class to suit you. The classes can be tailored to meet all needs, including exercises for simply stretching the legs and the back, healing old injuries, developing core strength or even just becoming aware of your own muscles and movement patterns. In addition, the affordable and flexible pricing means there are packages to fit all budgets.

Keep your eye on Movement Matters Bali in the next few months, as they will soon be offering group Pilates retreats that include fun workouts, excursions to unique sites around Bali and healing spa and detox therapies, plus online private and group sessions using professional software, and teacher training courses that cover the Gyrotonic Level 2 Pre-Training Program 1 and the Gyrotonic Level 2 Foundation Program 1.
